Special Issue on "Integrated Energy Systems"

Energy supply networks (e.g. electricity, natural gas, hydrogen, district heating, district cooling networks, electrified transportation, and the associated Information and communication infrastructure) are beginning to undergo a radical transformation which includes: the introduction of new components, new network configurations, new design and operation philosophies, and new incentives and business models. This revolution is affecting and integrating various energy systems, from energy production, energy supply networks, down to consumption. It is significantly increasing the coupling and interactions between energy systems at various scales (from multinational, national, community scale down to building level). It is also increasing the need for energy storage and flexible demand, and improving the business case for their deployment. This Special Issue in Applied Energy will cover this promising and dynamic area of research and development, while focusing on computational and technological aspects.

Topics of interest of this Special Issue include, but are not limited to the following aspects of the integrated energy systems:

  1. Interactions and interdependencies of energy supply networks, e.g. electricity/district heating networks, electricity/gas networks, electricity/hydrogen networks, and electricity/gas/district heating networks.

  2. Modelling and analysis methods

  3. Planning and design

  4. Energy management

  5. Environmental impact

  6. Business models

  7. Markets and regulatory frameworks

  8. The role of alternative electricity/gas/heat resources, electricity/gas/heat networks, energy storage and flexible demand in future integrated energy systems

  9. Co-management of energy supply networks and electrified transportation networks

  10. New concepts and solutions, e.g. multi-vector energy systems, energy hub, energy internet, and cyber-physical systems.

This Special Issue solicits original work on integrated energy systems (more than one energy systems should be considered in the paper) that must not be under consideration for publication in other venues. Full papers are solicited for reviews. Authors should refer to the Applied Energy author guidelines at http://www.journals.elsevier.com/applied-energy/ for information about content and formatting of submissions.

May 30
th, 2015: Full paper Submission
Sep 30
th, 2015: Final decision notification
Publication of Special Issue – November 2015
